조건·가정 · 부정·범위

실제·일반 조건과 비현실적인 현재·과거 가정을 구별합니다. 동사 형태와 문맥을 함께 보고 가정의 기준 시점과 실제 사실의 관계를 읽되, 문장이 보장하지 않는 실제 사실을 지나치게 단정하지 않습니다. 혼합 가정, if 없는 도치, wish·as if, without·but for, should·were to도 조건 관계로 연결합니다. 겉으로 if가 보이지 않을 때에는 조건과 결과를 복원해 이해합니다.

• As a solid rock is not shaken by the wind, wise people falter not amidst blame and praise.

  단단한 바위가 바람에 흔들리지 않듯, 지혜로운 사람들은 비난과 칭찬 속에서도 흔들리지 않는다.

• Let him not despise what he has received, nor ever envy others: a mendicant who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

  자기가 받은 것을 업신여기거나 다른 이를 부러워하지 않게 하라. 다른 이를 부러워하는 수행자는 마음의 평안을 얻지 못한다.

• I should like not to boast of my excellence, nor to make a display of my meritorious deeds.

  나는 내 훌륭함을 자랑하거나 공적을 드러내고 싶지 않다.

• Verily yoga is not for him who eateth too much, nor who abstaineth to excess, nor who is too much addicted to sleep, nor even to wakefulness, O Arjuna.

  참으로 요가는 너무 많이 먹는 이, 지나치게 금식하는 이, 잠에 지나치게 빠진 이나 깨어 있음에 지나치게 빠진 이를 위한 것이 아니다, 아르주나여.

• Seek the good of other men, but be not in bondage to their faces or fancies; for that is but facility, or softness; which taketh an honest mind prisoner.

  다른 사람의 이익을 구하되 그들의 표정이나 변덕에 얽매이지 마라. 그것은 정직한 마음을 사로잡는 유약함일 뿐이다.

• For there is no man, that imparteth his joys to his friend, but he joyeth the more; and no man that imparteth his griefs to his friend, but he grieveth the less.

  친구에게 기쁨을 나누면 누구나 더 기뻐하고, 슬픔을 나누면 누구나 덜 슬퍼한다.

• Let not a man force a habit upon himself, with a perpetual continuance, but with some intermission.

  습관을 들일 때 자신에게 끝없이 강요하지 말고 어느 정도 쉬어 가며 하라.

• Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.
